Title: Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator

Reports to: Pastor


The objective of the Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator is to coordinate a church pastoral ministry for children and youth; coordinate children and youth ministry team; develop close communications with and mutual support from families of children and youth and collaborate with other community and church organizations and offices.

An effective Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator will address the needs of children and youth and maximize opportunities for children and youth to grow in strength, wisdom, and faith as Christian disciples in the congregation and community. Children and Youth ministry shall be for, with, and by children and youth.

Job Responsibilities

Program development

The Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator will:

  • Coordinate, determine, and direct children and youth programs, education, and services.
  • Develop relationships conducive to open communication with parents, children, youth, church, and community.
  • Increase awareness of and reach out to other community agencies and resources that interface with children and youth.
  • Coordinate and participate in weekday and weekend youth events (i.e., ROCK retreat, paintball, lock-ins, children’s holiday events, etc.) and education programs. Including, but not limited to:
    • Weekly worship and Sunday school
    • Youth group participation (2x/month minimum)
    • Vacation Bible school participation
  • Involve youth in outreach and service programs.
  • Research and develop programs to broaden and strengthen children and youth ministry as needed.
  • Provide a spiritual component in youth gatherings and incorporate Biblical and religious teaching within youth lessons.


Relationships and Accountability

The Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator will:

  • Understand and follow the conference safe sanctuary policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Raise congregational awareness of the needs and contributions of youth in the community and communicate in advance upcoming programs and events.
  • Encourage young people to develop their own gifts, skills, strengths, and ideas.
  • Operate within budget and monitor and fully account for spending and receipts.
  • Work with senior pastor for personal spiritual growth and development to best meet the spiritual needs of children and youth.



  • Must be at least 23 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (for travel and transportation responsibilities)
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, conflict management skills, and computer skills
  • Must exhibit personal and growing relationship with God and Jesus Christ and a teachable spirit
  • Must have vision and a demonstrated ability to plan, develop, coordinate, manage and implement children and youth ministry within the parameters of the United Methodist Church and embrace Christian discipline, doctrine and theology
  • Must have a proven ability to work effectively and maintain appropriate relationships, with children, youth, diverse individuals, and teams of volunteers



  • The Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator will work according to schedule to be arranged with the pastor.
  • Friendship United Methodist Church will have a bi-annual review of job performance, and Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator is expected to maintain job requirements as assigned.
  • If the Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator should desire to resign, Staff-Parish Relations Committee requires a minimum of 30 days’ notice. If not meeting the job requirements satisfactory to the Staff Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, the Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator may be terminated.
